The specialty
Oculoplastic surgeons are ophthalmologists (eye surgeons) who have gone on to specialise in plastic and reconstructive surgery around the eye.
- They treat the eyelids, the tear drainage system, the orbit (eye socket) and the surrounding face.
- The work ranges from correcting drooping or turned eyelids to reconstruction after an injury or removal of a growth, and care of the eye socket, including preparing it for an artificial eye.
- Because they are eye surgeons first, they plan eyelid and orbital surgery with the comfort and health of the eye, and vision, in mind.

Conditions commonly treated
- Eyelids: drooping upper lid (ptosis), excess eyelid skin (blepharoplasty), eyelids turning in or out (entropion, ectropion), eyelid growths and eyelid reconstruction.
- Tear drainage: watering eyes and blocked tear ducts in adults and children.
- Orbit: fractures, infection, thyroid eye disease and growths.
- Eye socket: artificial eyes and socket reconstruction.
- Brow and cosmetic eyelid surgery.

When to see an oculoplastic surgeon
- An eyelid that droops, turns in or out, or does not close fully.
- An eye that waters all the time, or a swelling at the inner corner of the eye.
- A new or changing lump on the eyelid.
- A bulging or sunken eye, or double vision after an injury.
- Discomfort or problems with an artificial eye.
A painful red swelling around the eye with fever, pain on moving the eye, or a sudden change in vision needs urgent medical attention.
